Pre and Post Electrolysis Care
Pre-Care for Electrolysis
Taking these steps helps make the treatment session more comfortable and the hair removal easier.
1. Avoid sun exposure: Protecting your skin from excessive sun exposure is essential before your electrolysis session. Sunburned or tanned skin can be more sensitive during treatment, so use sunscreen and cover the treated areas.
2. Avoid waxing, plucking, or threading: Refrain from any hair removal methods that remove the hair at the root, such as waxing, plucking, or threading. These methods can disrupt the hair growth cycle, making electrolysis less effective. Make sure the hair is long enough (minimum 4/5mm)- for most people, this is 5-7 days’ worth of growth
3. Drink plenty of water 1-7 days prior! A well-hydrated skin can help the treatment be more comfortable. It's also better at conducting the electrical currents used in treatment. So drink plenty of water the week leading up to, and especially the day before your appointment. Avoid things that will dehydrate your skin, such as caffeine and alcohol.
4. Clean the treatment area: On the day of your appointment, thoroughly cleanse the area with a mild, fragrance-free soap. This ensures the skin is clean and free from any oils, lotions, or makeup that could interfere with the treatment.
5. Some clients may find that they are more sensitive during or right before their menstrual cycle and may want to avoid making appointments during that time.
6. Prep for the pain: Yes, electrolysis can be a little uncomfortable. Everyone has their reaction to pain and has different pain tolerance levels. The sensation from electrolysis is often compared to plucking the hair or a slight pinching feeling. Suppose you know you have a lower tolerance for pain and are worried about feeling pain during your treatment. In that case, we recommend taking an anti-inflammatory pain reliever about 30 minutes to an hour before your appointment. Before the treatment, we also treat the area with a mild numbing agent to help manage any other pain. We'll do everything we can to make the process as comfortable as possible, so please let us know what you're feeling throughout the treatment.

Post-Care for Electrolysis
Congratulations!
You've completed your first electrolysis appointment! Your skin will likely be sensitive after undergoing electrolysis hair removal and require special care. You may experience symptoms ranging from slight irritation, sensitivity, or soreness to redness, small bumps, and minor swelling. These are all typical and expected symptoms, mainly if this has been your first treatment. Redness and swelling usually disappear in an hour or two but can last longer. Other symptoms should clear up after one or two days but don't hesitate to contact us if they persist.
The following instructions are a helpful guideline for the first 48 hours after treatment.
1. After an electrolysis treatment, the follicles in the treated area will be open and susceptible to bacteria, so keeping the area clean is essential. Use a facial cleanser or a skin disinfectant and minimise contact with the area. Feel free to use your aloe vera. After your electrolysis session, gently apply a recommended soothing gel or cream to the treated area. This helps alleviate any temporary redness, swelling, or discomfort.
2. Depending on where the electrolysis is done on the body, there may be some minor scabbing - do not pick them off. This is normal, and they will go away in a few days. It's essential to avoid touching or picking at the treated area to prevent infection and allow the skin to heal correctly. Please keep the area clean and avoid excessive friction or irritation.
3. Protect your skin from the sun: Shield the treated area from direct sunlight and consistently wear sunscreen with a high SPF(minimum 30 SPF). This protects the skin as it may be more sensitive following electrolysis. Do not go tanning or get a sunburn on the treated area for at least two days.
4. Wait 24 hours to apply makeup on the treated area. Avoid cosmetics that may cause clogged pores (look for non-comedogenic), and do not use powder for 48 hours. If you experience swelling, use ice on the area to bring it down.
5. Follow the recommended treatment schedule: Electrolysis typically requires multiple sessions to achieve permanent hair removal. Please follow the recommended treatment schedule provided by your electrologist to make sure you get the best results.
6. Use aloe or cortisone to promote healing and moisturise the area. You may apply an antibiotic cream at night if you'd like.
7. Communicate any concerns: If you experience any unusual reactions or have concerns about the treated area, promptly communicate with your electrologist. They are trained to address your questions and provide guidance for proper aftercare.
Remember, everyone's skin may react differently to electrolysis, so it's essential to follow the specific pre and post-care instructions provided by your electrologist. By adhering to these guidelines, you can maximise the benefits of your electrolysis treatment and achieve smooth, long-lasting results.
